Techniques in Figure Skating

Skating does not mean simply gliding and moving on ice. There are specific techniques involved in order to get to a certain point while doing certain moves. These techniques are sculling, stroking, and crossovers.

In order to skate forward or backward without lifting either skate, you will have to use the sculling technique. Before you can scull by yourself, you have to get away from the rink barrier, so that you avoid the possibility of hitting it in the event of a fall while sculling, and learn quicker to scull because of the removal of the railings for support, thereby having more focus on the undertaking. Sculling is performed by first standing with weight evenly distributed on both feet and arms on both sides. The knees are bent and ankles tightened, then the toes are turned out away from each other, with shifts in weight until the legs separate and straighten. The toes are then turned toward each other, just like pigeon toes. The steps are merely repeated for continuous sculling.

The second, equally important technique to be aware of is stroking, the use of only one foot for gliding. With one foot forward while both skates touch each other in a 45-degree angle, the entire body weight is first on the foot that is on the back. With movement, the weight is shifted to the foot that is in front, while the left is used to push the body. The skater then glides using the foot that was initially in front. Once the glide slows down, the other foot is once again placed next to the gliding foot, and weight is once again evenly distributed on both limbs. The previously gliding foot is then used to push against the ice, while the other foot is the one used to glide. The 45-degree angle between the skates needs to be maintained between glides. Again, for continuous stroking, one merely needs to repeat the steps.

The third technique, called crossover, is self-explanatory. One leg, or the outside skate, crosses over the other, the inside skate, while gliding forward or skating backwards. This is especially useful around corners because it is perfect for changing directions. It is a must not just around corners but also when going in circles and building speed. It is only difference from stroking is the crossing over of the legs. To do a right over left crossover, the stance is similar to that of stroking, but the right leg crosses over the left leg then the weight is transferred to the right skate. The left knee is then straightened, and used to push with its outside edge. The process is just repeated for another crossover.

Aside from these three, there are other similarly essential techniques, such as doing spins and spirals, getting up on skates in the event of a fall, learning how to stop, and some footwork sequences. These cannot be learned by merely reading, though. One has to go through the steps in a real skating rink in order to truly learn them by heart.

They have swearing and harsh language that comes up at the bottom of the screen while you are playing. I also found that the Ninja Kiwi website was one of those with bad advertising. The next fun game is Cat With Bow Golf. The game is extremely fun and challenging. You are a cat trying to shoot a bow at the targets like in golf. The animations with the cat are funny as it flops around. All around it is an excellent game.

Two more games I like that are safe are Indestructo Tank 2 and Xeno Tactic. At first I was cautious because o the violence in these games. Then I realized that violence wasn't the main focus, but strategy was. In Xeno Tactic you build turrets to destroy the enemy aliens before they reach the exit. In Indestructo Tank 2 you guide an indestructible tank through three different types of game play, destroying enemy airplanes in the process. Although these games are good, the Armor games website is definitely not a safe place, but Online Game Squad is.

Finally I think that all online Sonic and Mario Games are good. They usually are too representative of the original games to be bad.

The Final Cut - Royal Rumble 2004 Review

Hello and welcome to the second edition of The Final Cut in as many days, the column that brought you such mark-out moments as "KICK HIS F'N HEAD IN FOLEY!" and "BENOIT! BENOIT! BENOIT! BENOIT! BENOIT! OH MY GOD! BENOIT!" I'm blaming the alcohol and I'm sticking to it!

Those kind people at Sentanta Sports asked us to kindly part with 15.99 GBP (14.99 GBP ordering by remote) for the privilege of watching the Royal Rumble, and after the recent standards of pay-per-views from World Wrestling Entertainment some of us, including me, were questioning our generosity.

[World Tag Team Championship] Tables Match Ric Flair & Batista vs. The Dudley Boyz

It turned out to be D'von who would take the plunge through the table, was there really any doubt that a Dudley would not go through? Giving Batista a couple of seconds to talk on the mic, as they walked down the aisle, was a nice idea. His mic work is coming along just fine.

This match was a typical crowd warm up match on a pay-per-view. Fast

Personally I would have knocked this feud on the head right at the end of this tag team match, but knowing The Dudley Boyz are the number one face tag team in World Wrestling Entertainment this is not going to happen any time soon.

I know that a lot of people thought that this match was boring, dire and dead through out, and they may have a point but the match did what it was asked to do and that is warm up the crowd.

On a side note. Ric looked like he hurt himself when the table smashed him in the face.

Winner: Ric Flair & Batista

[WWE Cruiserweight Championship] Rey Mysterio vs. Jamie Noble

Every match that was on the card, apart from the rumble and the Triple H/HBK match, had one thing in common, they were all too short. The average length was about 8-10 minutes.

This match did not have time to unravel as it could of done, just when it could have got interesting the match was ended with a rather mundane fashion.

But there was one good thing to come out of this dire match. Nidia "accidentally" grabbed Noble's leg as he came off the ropes. I have a feeling we may have witnessed the seeds being sown for the eventual turn by Nidia on Jamie.

Winner: Rey Mysterio

[Family Feud] Eddie Guerrero Vs Chavo Guerrero Jr

The feud leading up to this match was booked, as I said before, absolutely fantastic and the match itself more than matched the exception's set by the greatness of the booking.

Eddie attempting to keep his cool and trying to out-wrestle Chavito only made the match that much more enjoyable to watch. Eddie walked out of the ring with an unexpected win but not before beating the hell out of his nephew and his brother.

This is not over. I do believe that if World Wrestling Entertainment continue to book and push this feud as they have done then this feud could run comfortably right up until No Way Out on the 15th of February.

Winner: Eddie Guerrero

[WWE Championship] Brock Lesnar vs. Hardcore Holly

I actually went to the toilet and then made myself a sandwich (making sure I washed my hands thoroughly!) I came back and caught about two minutes of the match and from what I saw it really was not that bad at all.

Yes, the match was very shot but I think it was just about the right amount of time to show if Brock can carry someone like Hardcore to a decent match.

Coming to the end of the match Brock started slipping which is probably why the ending was so rushed. But up until the last 30 seconds Brock was dragging Holly up to his level and kept him there easily.

Let us prey that Holly returns from whence he came.

Winner: Hardcore Holly, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Erm, I mean Brock Lesnar

[World Heavyweight Championship] Last Man Standing Match Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels

This match was scheduled to be the match of the night and it is extremely difficult to decide whether this excellent match got the award or if Chavo Guerrero and Eddie Guerrero's classic encounter got it instead.

Whenever Shawn Michael's wrestles Triple H on a pay-per-view, which seems to be every month these days, Shawn Michaels always pulls out a huge high spot move. And this match offered no exception.

Within the first ten minutes or so Shawn Michaels executed an awesome looking asai moonsault and went straight through the Spanish announce team's commentary table.

The ending spoiled what could have been a plain match of the night winner in my eyes. A double knock-out was not the best of finishes but considering that both wrestlers needed to save face, I think that they made a wise choice. Hey! It was either that or have Evolution interfere!

Winner: Triple H

[The Royal Rumble Match]

The rumble match was billed the greatest rumble match in it's entire history. Did it manage to deliver? Oh you bet your life it delivered. Sure it was void of surprise wrestlers that we have come to accustom the rumble with over the years, and yes it was shorter than normal, but damn it was a good one!

When the buzzer sounded for wrestler number __ to enter the rumble the place went black and the gong from the Undertaker's old phenom music played and then it stopped as the fans exploded in response, sadly it was Spike who came out and not The Deadman. Kane sold it brilliantly by screaming "I buried you alive!"

This plants a nice little seed for Taker to return and he must surely be returning with his old Phenom gimmick.

But there was a truly great mark-out moment to come. The buzzer sounded and Test's music played. Test did not come out and they went backstage to see him unconscious and Austin screaming at someone who could not be seen. Austin insisted that the mystery man take Test's place.

30 seconds later Mick Foley's music played as he came storming down the ramp and beat the hell out of Randy Orton all over the place. Randy Orton hit Mick with some great chair shots and sold Mick's beating like there was no tomorrow.

This has got me interested into what will go down on Raw.

Chris Benoit. The man who has been lost in the shuffle over and over again did what only Shawn Michaels has done and went from number one in the rumble and won the thing by lifting Big Show out.

When Benoit won the rumble he went nuts and the fans reacted which made me smile. NOBODY deserves this more than Chris Benoit does.

Winner: Chris Benoit

The majority of the writing community has condemned the Royal Rumble as a poor or dire showing but I have to disagree with this. OK most of the matches were short but considering this the Rumble and Triple H/HBK matches more than made up for that face.

With the first pay-per-view of the year being a very solid outing it will be interesting to see if No Way Out can hit the same mark that Royal Rumble did.

Punching Bag Workouts - The Best Cardio-Strength Building Workout Around

Before jumping right in, let me clarify the title: Working the punching bag can provide the best tradeoff between cardio and strength training - This was not meant to imply that working the bag would make you stronger than doing squats with 500 lbs or that it would give you better endurance than running 5 miles a day. Punching bags provide a very effective way to achieve both goals in a very short amount of time.

The Cardio Aspect: To begin, try standing in one place and throwing one jab a second for a full minute. A jab should be quick and make a popping sound upon bag impact. This should not be a strong punch like the cross; the jab is only meant to stun your opponent and set up future punches. After a full minute of jabs, rest and try it for two minutes, and then try "dancing" around the bag for a minute while jabbing approximately once every second for a minute. You'll notice that you start to sweat pretty quickly and simple normally overlooked actions such as minuscule jabs can be quite taxing and give you quite the workout. Try a 1 minute session standing still for warming up, followed by a 2 minute session with circling the bag. Rest a minute and repeat.

The Strength Aspect: Throw two jabs, a cross and circle the bag. The cross should be a very strong punch where you use your whole body weight to strike the bag, pivoting off your opposite foot. So if you're a righty, your left foot should pivot. Try two sessions of 3 minutes each, just landing strong solid punches while still remembering to circle the bag. We are after strength so try to really push through all of your punches.

Mix it Up: To completely exhaust you, try a final 3 minute session that combines cardio and strength methodologies. Throw three, or four jabs followed by a cross, hook, uppercut combination. Really explode on the bag while still being safe; contact the bag aiming for the flat part of your your middle finger and pointer (not your knuckles). Yes, you will get a great workout either way, but it's always better not to break your hand. If you can last a full three minutes, you're in great shape.

So the whole workout is less than 15 minutes and you expend much more energy than you would running. I'm not going to give you numbers here since there is a bit of range depending on the source, but Google "calorie burn activity chart" and compare boxing to the other activities. You'll notice that it's towards the highest calorie burn activities, considerably more intensive than running.

Some have suggested a kinetic kill shot missile, and others have suggested using nuclear weapons strapped to an asteroid to blow it out of the sky.

However, a real deadly asteroid which was several kilometers wide would take a huge amount of nuclear weapons to blow apart. However, if we used vibrational energy or harmonic resonance to break the ionic bonds, then we could hit with a very small weapons to break it apart and send the pieces in all different directions, so that it could not reform again due to the large gravitational mass.
